Halloween Safety

Tips for Halloween Safety

Halloween is one of the most exciting and most memorable days of the year. Kids of all ages love to dress up and go Trick-or-Treating.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the same idea of fun.

  • Traffic accidents can happen when kids walk in the streets from house to house.
  • Older kids will often bully younger kids and even steal their candy (or worse).
  • Sociopaths have been known to alter the treats they give, thinking the damage they cause is somehow funny.

Here are some things you can do to keep Halloween safer for you and your children.

Preparation:

  • Choose a costume made with flame-retardant materials.
  • Charge up your cell phone.
  • Buy a flashlight, glow sticks, glowing bracelet, or reflective tape.
  • Prepare a good dinner.

Trick-or-Treating

  • Go with your younger children. If you have older children, try to get them to “take care of” their younger brothers and sisters.
  • Carry a cell phone or give your phone to your child.
  • Travel in groups.
  • Stick to neighborhoods where you know you are safe.
  • Carry a flashlight, wear a glow stick, a glowing bracelet, or some reflective tape so that motorists can see you in the dark.
  • Use sidewalks and stay off the roads.
  • Don’t go between buildings or down dark alleys.

 At Home:

  • Check all treats for evidence of tampering. Throw away anything suspicious.
  • Portion out the candy over several days, so as not to let your kids get sick.

Developing a Healthy, Balanced Child

There’s more to education than reading, writing, and arithmetic. Children need to learn how to control their growing bodies, deal with complex emotions, and navigate social situations.

Academic schools are great for educating the mind, but what about the rest of the child? Recent budget constraints have cut funding for physical education, music and art education, and many other “non-academic” disciplines.

Let’s look at some of these “non-academic” areas:

  1. Physical Fitness. Children need healthy exercise, but they also need to learn good eating habits to stay healthy, as well as gross and fine motor skills to develop their coordination and body awareness. Unfortunately, many schools don’t address these needs.
  2. Mental Discipline. It seems more and more children these days exhibit symptoms of ADD (attention Deficit Disorder), and with our short attention span society, they need a structured way to learn to focus or concentrate. Many recent laws have stripped the ability of public schools to enforce discipline.
  3. Emotional Self-Control. In many ways, the difference between a child and an adult is emotional control. Temper tantrums seem to come naturally to children, who have to learn over time that they cannot always get their own way, and must control their emotions in order to be considerate of others. Emotional education is not part of your average school curriculum.
  4. Social Confidence. Learning to deal with other people is a skill set that can be learned. Unfortunately, character education — the very foundation of treating people right – is not a proper academic subject.

martial arts kidsSo, where can concerned parents turn?

The martial arts have centuries of experience teaching physical, mental, and emotional discipline. Students learn amazing physical skills. They practice mental discipline every day, learning emotional self-control. Most important of all, they are taught right from wrong, to develop outstanding character and personal leadership.

Hundreds of parents in our community have seen their children get a balanced education in our children’s martial arts programs.

5 Ways to Bring Your Life Back into Balance

Balance is a tricky thing: too much of this or too little of that, and OOPS! you are off balance.

In addition, human beings are complicated: We all have physical needs, intellectual needs, emotional needs, spiritual needs, and social needs. With all these aspects to our lives, it can be difficult to attain and maintain balance. Here are 5 ways to bring balance into your life:meditate

  1. Exercise Daily. Your body was designed to move. Exercise builds strength, improves circulation, endurance, flexibility, and overall health. If you exercise too little, you tend to get sick more often. If you exercise too much, you may injure yourself. The right amount of exercise keeps you healthy.
  2. Focus. Your mind is like a muscle, in that it can be exercised to become stronger and trained to perform better. Learn to control your thoughts by practicing focus. Focus on whatever you are doing – whether it’s work or play – to train your mind to perform better. You can handle stress better by intentionally focusing on solutions instead of problems.
  3. Calm down. Riding a roller coaster of emotions wreaks havoc on your life. You can control your emotions, or they can control you. Bystaying calm and centered, you can focus your energy in a positive direction.
  4. Count your blessings. When you compare yourself to others, it’s easy to see someone who has more. It’s also just as easy to see someone who has less. Be grateful for what you have. The secret to happiness is not getting what you want, but wanting what you get.
  5. Associate with positive people. As much as 80%of our happiness comes from others. If your friends are negative, angry, or unhealthy, you will tend to be negative, angry, and unhealthy. Why not choose positive friends who will encourage you to be healthy, focused, calm, and happy?

Most people are good in one area or another, but balance – by definition – means that one or two areas aren’t enough. You need to balance all areas of your life.

martial arts coupleThe easiest way to achieve all these goals in one shot is to practice the martial arts. You will get great, healthy exercise, learn to focus your mind, calm your emotions, and appreciate what you have. Possibly the best part is that you will make positive new friends and role models, who will help you maintain healthy balance in your life.
